M e t h o d s Data sources: MEDLINE (to March 2005), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (issue 4, 2004), and bibliographies of included studies and relevant reviews. Study selection and assessment: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or prospective cohort studies that were published in English since 1980, included ≥ 100 patients with ischemic stroke or TIA followed for ≥ 1 year with < 5% loss to follow-up, and reported incidence of MI or nonstoke vascular death. Studies were excluded if they involved patients with mainly hemorrhagic stroke or an unusual cause of stroke, or highly selected populations. 25 RCTs and 14 cohort studies (n = 65 996) met the selection criteria. 2 reviewers independently determined eligibility of studies using a standardized form. Outcomes: Nonfatal, fatal, and total MI, and nonstroke vascular death.

Risk of myocardial infarction and vascular death after transient ischemic attack and ischemic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND Whether stroke patients should be investigated for asymptomatic coronary artery disease remains matter of debate. Absolute risks of myocardial infarction (MI) and vascular death after a stroke have not been accurately assessed. We performed a systematic review and a meta-analysis to determine the risk of MI and nonstroke vascular death after transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischem...
متن کاملOverestimation of coronary risk in stroke patients.
Overestimation of Coronary Risk in Stroke Patients To the Editor: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is usually considered a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in stroke patients, although absolute risk of CAD in stroke/transient ischemic attack patients is still not well known and highest risk patients are not well identified. Dhamoon et al provide interesting data in this field, but we h...
متن کاملCopeptin and Long-Term Risk of Recurrent Vascular Events After Transient Ischemic Attack and Ischemic Stroke: Population-Based Study.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Copeptin, the c-terminal portion of provasopressin, is a useful prognostic marker in patients after myocardial infarction and heart failure. More recently, high levels of copeptin have also been associated with worse functional outcome and increased mortality within the first year after ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA). However, to date, there are no pu...
متن کاملIs the long-term prognosis of transient ischemic attack or minor ischemic stroke affected by the occurrence of nonfocal symptoms?
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In patients with a transient ischemic attack or ischemic stroke, nonfocal neurological symptoms, such as confusion and nonrotatory dizziness, may be associated with a higher risk of vascular events. We assessed the relationship between nonfocal symptoms and the long-term risk of vascular events or death in patients with a transient ischemic attack or minor ischemic stroke...
متن کاملLong-term risk of stroke and other vascular events in patients with asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis.
CONTEXT The annual risk of ischemic stroke in patients with asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis is about 2% during the short-term (2-3 years), but the long-term risks of stroke and other vascular events are unknown, although they may affect surgical decision making. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the long-term risk of stroke and other vascular events in patients with asymptomatic carotid artery steno...
